| NEW jas Silks Wins
at ACTS - 2/26/2002 |
Congratulations to Jane Sasonow-White of jas SILKS, who
won the Atlantic Canada Craft Award for Excellence in the
category of Product Design at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show in
Halifax in February, 2002.
The ACTS jury was
particularly impressed by the way in which Sasonow-White has
taken her design themes (images of nature originally used in
one-of-a-kind hand-painted silk wall hangings) and found ways
to reduce the time required to produce each piece. The
techniques she has developed include a combination of painting
on silk with silk screening, silk-screening alone, and offset
printing.

Thistle, Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development,
hold the Excellence in Product Design award at the ACTS awards
banquet.
The jas SILKS product line now
includes one-of-a-kind silk banners, "series" banners (using
silk-screening and silk painting, cotton wearables and
household products (screened images), and paper products,
including note cards and posters. By employing a range of
production techniques, Sasonow-White is able to concentrate
more of her time on design artistry and application of
colours, yet maintain a range and availability of
products.
Sasonow-White noted her appreciation to the
Craft Council for the nomination. "I owe a special thanks to
director Anne Manuel, who has watched my work develop over the
last decade, for eloquently putting that process into words.
The Council's staff and volunteers have contributed in a large
way to my success."
The Atlantic Craft Trade Show is
held annually in Halifax; each year a different Atlantic
province acts as "host." The official host for the 2003 show
is Newfoundland and
Labrador.
